Susanne Maria Wolf studied at the Minerva College of Art in Groningen, The Netherlands, The Royal College of Art in Antwerp, Belgium and at the National College of Art and Design in Dublin, Ireland, where she graduated with honours in 1987. She has worked and lectured in Ireland, The Bahamas, Germany and The Netherlands, where she is currently living. Her work has been shown in solo and group exhibitions in Ireland, Germany, The Netherlands and Belgium. Her work, which involves diverse media, is based on research in scientific institutions, such as natural history museums and laboratories. The themes of her work evolve from a study of insects; their form, their programmed behaviour and their complex elaborate nest making. The nests (a synonym for the human 'nest') symbolize safety and protection but also dependence and constraint.
Susanne Maria Wolf werkt in gemengde technieken zoals o.a. rubber, textiel, papier maché, maar gaat in eerste instantie uit van tekeningen, die zijn ontstaan in natuurhistorische musea, laboratoria en dierentuinen. Het onderzoek, het uitstallen en het verzamelen maken een belangrijk deel uit van haar werk. De afgelopen jaren heeft zij zich vooral op het bestuderen van insecten gericht: hun vormen, hun geprogrammeerd gedrag, en hun ingewikkelde en doorwrochte bouwwerken. Deze “nesten” ( een synoniem voor het menselijke nest ) symboliseren veiligheid en geborgenheid maar ook gebondenheid en afhankelijkheid.
